Reading at the Transition: Interim Evidence Brief (Higgins, Katsipataki and Coleman, Jun 2014)

  • Develop knowledge of the reading journey from KS2 to KS3
  • Collaborate with colleagues in different schools and different phases
  • Engage in action research to develop enjoyment and attainment in reading

Structure

The course takes place over three twilight sessions, each lasting from 2pm until 5pm:


Day 1

  • Develop strategies to develop reading for enjoyment and wider reading skills
  • Develop an understanding of the key reading requirements at KS2 and KS3
  • Understand the principles of action research
  • Begin thinking about focus groups and projects

Day 2

  • Consider initial audit and baseline findings and share plans for developing projects
  • Explore a range of approaches to increase engagement with texts and improve attainment in reading
  • Engage with action research and foster and develop critical reflection

Day 3

  • Showcase and celebrate each school's project
  • Develop long term strategies to disseminate school-wide
  • Address parental and community engagement

Cost and dates

£350 for the first delegate per school and £250 for every colleague that you bring. The cost includes a year's premium membership of the National Literacy Trust - existing member schools receive a £50 discount. Email schools@literacytrust.org.uk to access your discount code.
