Are you an experienced project officer with a background in education, local government or relationship building and a clear understanding of the Doncaster area and the challenges it faces?
We are recruiting a project officer to coordinate our National Literacy Trust Hub in Doncaster, working alongside our partners at Doncaster Opportunity Area. A Hub is a ten-year, place-based response to the challenges of intergenerational low literacy. You will work with the Opportunity Area and other local partners, as well as our national team, to shape and deliver activity as part of a local strategy.
This role will be part of our Communities and local areas team, and be responsible for delivering the strategic plan as agreed by the local Senior Steering Group. You will work closely with the Literacy Campaign Manager appointed by the Doncaster Opportunity Area.
You will need to be a strong team player, working closely with partners across the area, where you will be based, and with colleagues among the central National Literacy Trust team in London and at other Hub locations around the country.
One person in six has poor literacy skills that impact on every area of their life. A child without good reading, writing and communication skills will struggle to succeed at school, and as an adult they could be locked out of the job market. Poverty doubles the likelihood that, by the age of five, a child’s literacy skills will be below average.
We are an independent charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK. Our research and analysis make us the leading authority on literacy. We run projects in the poorest communities, campaign to make literacy a priority for politicians and parents, and support schools. Our mission is to give young people the literacy skills they need to get a job and lead a successful life.
As well as a competitive salary, we offer benefits including a generous annual leave allowance totalling 39 days (including bank holidays and office closure between Christmas and New Year), pensions contributions of 8% of annual salary, a cycle to work scheme, season ticket loans and other health and wellbeing benefits.
This role is based in Doncaster and provides an opportunity for secondment for employees the local authority or aligned services in the area.
