Dream up a World: Storytelling project with Steven Camden

Added 17 Mar 2024 | Updated 25 Mar 24

Steven Camden

In partnership with poet and author Steven Camden AKA Polarbear, and supported by REY Paper, we have created this fun and interactive storytelling project designed to inspire a love of story creation and storytelling for pupils aged 7 to 11 (KS2/P4 to P7).

“Children were engaged and motivated to write. I planned it for the whole school and including a family event for parents to join their children to illustrate their stories. There’s a buzz for writing around school.”

About the Dream up a World storytelling project

Our project aims to help you connect the children in your class with creative elements that transform writing into a pleasurable, personal practice, incorporating the freedom to express their imaginative ideas.

The project allows pupils to:

  • experience the craft of creation engaging with an author's writing process
  • explore narrative writing skills through thinking aloud, planning, rehearsing, drafting and editing
  • apply their own ideas to the creation of narrative settings, characters and plot.

How to use this resource

The resource includes a link to kickstart your storytelling project through watching Steven in action demonstrating his craft of interactive story building! Our classroom resources then provide a learning sequence for you to deliver which supports pupils in building their own story world inspired by Steven's own creative process.

You may like to consider taking time out of your normal timetable to deliver the project across a whole day, or two half days, to keep children's creativity flowing, maintain focus and culminate in a showcase of ideas.

Curriculum linked for study across the UK

At the end of the resource you'll find a full set of curriculum links mapped to the different curricula for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

“It’s been fantastic. I’ve visited every class during the writing process and it has been transformational.”
